Location: 1 Audrey Zapp Dr, Jersey City, NJ 07305

Project description:

The Central Railroad of New Jersey charted a waterfront location in Jersey City for its new terminal. Built in 1889, the Terminal stands as the cornerstone of Liberty State Park. In its heyday, the Terminal was part of the largest railroad complex operating out of the New York Harbor region, transporting tens of thousands of daily commuters to Manhattan via ferry as well as welcoming new immigrants from Ellis Island. Today the Terminal stands as an historical landmark and now serves as a gateway for visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The Station has been listed on the NJ & National Register of Historic Places since September 12, 1975.

Project included:

We were proud to lead the restoration of the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal in Liberty State Park—an iconic landmark with deep roots in the region’s history. Our goal was to preserve its legacy while ensuring it remained safe and accessible for future generations.

Masonry and Brick Repointing of the West Gable Wall: We completed the repointing of the brickwork on the west gable wall. This involved removing deteriorated mortar and replacing it with new material to protect the structure from water damage and decay. To ensure historical accuracy, we took samples of the original mortar off-site for analysis and matched the new mortar’s chemical composition to that of the original.

Window Restoration: We also restored more than 300 original windows. Each window was carefully removed and transported off-site for detailed restoration. To keep the building secure during this process, we temporarily covered the openings with plywood until the restored windows were ready to be reinstalled.
